Claude Monet was one of the founders of the Impressionist style of painting, which was characterized by the use of loose brush work to create outdoor scenes under different conditions of sunlight. Monet often painted a particular scene dozens of times in order to capture it in every type of light. In his later years, he almost exclusively painted scenes from his garden at Giverny, including these water lilies.
