In this painting, Johns has taken three canvases of decreasing size and stacked them one on top of the other to create a three-dimensional sculpture that appears to be a flat painting because of the extreme two-dimensionality of the flag painted on each surface. The image of the American flag was chosen for the subject of this painting beacuse of its value as a readily recognizable icon as well as for its abstract flatness.
