Legend has it that Lady Godiva was the wife of a nobleman who raised taxes on his subjects until they could take it no more. The nobleman refused to change his policies until his wife began to protest the taxation. He agreed to remove the taxes on the condition that Lady Godiva ride through the marketplace of the town during the middle of the day. Much to his surprise, she agreed to his proposal and thus saved the peasants from any more outrageous taxation.
