Columbian painter Fernando Botero creates humorous portraits of Rubenesque figures in various everyday scenes. This painting captures a gallant picador on horseback. In bullfighting, a picador is a mounted man who carries spears in order to assist the bullfighter if he is seriously endangered by the bull. The horse is covered in heavily quilted armor to protect it from the bull's horns.
